我对战争题材一向持规避态度，我受不了那种血腥、残忍、肮脏，我厌恶战争，厌恶这种野蛮而暴虐的争端解决方式，我很少看战争题材的电影，也不爱读战争小说。
但《The Things They Carried》第一句就吸引了我。中尉吉米一直带着他所暗恋的女孩，家乡新泽西州塞巴斯蒂安山大学三年级学生玛莎的信。他希望这些信能是情书，但可惜它们只是朋友间的普通书信。尽管如此，他还是把信小心翼翼的折好，放进塑料袋，藏在行军囊的最下面。一天的行军完毕将近黄昏时，他挖好战壕，用行军壶里的水洗净手，便会把信取出来，用指尖轻轻捏住，借着最后一小时的天光，思念玛莎。Tim O’Brien的语言有一种游离于战争大环境之外的迷蒙感，那些亲昵而又琐屑的小细节，让人常常有一种云深不知身何处的错觉。比如玛莎随信寄给中尉吉米一颗在涨潮时海岸交接处捡到的小卵石作为平安符，因为那里“一切交汇而又分离”；吉米在越南令人烦躁的大热天里会把这颗小卵石唅在嘴里，用舌头翻来翻去，感受海的咸度与湿度。吉米想专注于眼前的战争，却无能为力的做着虚无飘渺的白日梦，他幻想自己光着脚，和玛莎一起走在新泽西的海岸线上，毫无负担。“他会感到自己升起来。阳光与海潮，还有温柔的风，还有爱与轻盈。”
中尉吉米只是战争的一个侧面。与吉米飘渺疏离的白日梦相穿插的，是越南战场上美军前线步兵装备的详尽描述——精确到盎司。他们依据战争需要负重，他们根据职位和地形负重，他们根据任务负重，他们根据迷信负重。他们背着纸、笔、别针、信号弹、电线、剃刀片、烟草、蜡烛、指甲刀……他们背着越南这片土地，背着疲惫，他们背着越南的天空，还有盖满了他们皮靴和面孔的红土，潮湿、雨季、真菌、腐败的味道。背上了，便再也拿不下来。

Tim O’Brien在这本小说中采取了虚实结合的写作手法。前一章刚刚详尽描述完一个人物，一段战争中的恐怖经历，后一章却又推翻刚才的描述，坦诚均是虚构。这样的安排并不是为了迷惑读者，而澄清也绝非交代。Tim O’Brien在“怎样讲述一个真实的战争故事”中说，一个真实的战争故事从来都跟道德无关，真实的发生和印象中的真实发生其实很难区分，无论如何，一个真实的战争故事永远无法叫人信服。在“好体裁”一章中，他进一步提出了“故事真实”与“发生真实”的区分。作为作者，他想要读者感受到他曾经真切感受到的震惊、沮丧、负罪、恐惧等等情感——这一切都是“发生真实”的；然而戏剧化了的“故事真实”却最能够将这些情感情绪具象化，直接化。从这个角度来看，“故事真实”与“发生真实”在情感上都是切实的，故事的虚构只是表达手法上的变化，为的是更准确而直接的传达强烈的情绪。
如此安排的小说，跳跃性非常大，如同散文；但不管哪一章，不管是描述战前，战争中，还是战后，内容都离不开“负重”这个大主题。情感最为强烈的一章是Tim O’Brien描述他接到入伍诏书试图逃离去加拿大的情形。21岁的青年，刚刚从大学毕业，在社会反战大潮中模糊的憎恨着战争，还以为有大把的青春可以挥霍，还以为战争政治都与自己无关，一纸诏书却让他愤怒，颤栗，无比的害怕死亡。精神的重迫终于在一个早晨把他压垮，他“感到胸口里什么东西破裂了”，是“物理的破裂——那种破开—渗漏—碎裂的过程”。“我胸口里还有那种渗漏的感觉，一种温暖而又珍贵的东西流了出来……很长时间我只能专注于让自己不要垮掉。”这样的句子，加之他所描述的屠宰场，血雾，腥臭，读来直叫人触目惊心。但这还不是情感最强烈的端口。他在达到美加边境后，在船上抉择自己是否要跳船游到加拿大逃避兵役，平静的湖面，舒缓的风，安静的对岸树丛，对比着他胸中翻江倒海的情绪，家乡的小镇、亲朋、同学，大体育场里赛场上的灯光，热狗与爆米花的香气，人声，战争电影，枪崩掉的手指头，眼睛被打成星状黑洞死在地上的越南民兵…
